Blog Post #3 : Debate of St Lucy's....Who won???
"St Lucy' s Home For Girls Raised By Wolves" by Karen Russell was a book about wolves adapting to a human environment....with nuns. The girls weren't ACTUALLY wolves but they lived like one, they acted like one, + they were considered a pack. Throughout the story, we had Claudette, the narrator who was considered selfish, Mirabella, who was the one out of everybody not to adapt, and lastly Jeanette, the oldest who adapted very quick making her the most hated. We've answered questions, did a quiz, annotated and highlighted the text and now we were doing a debate. "Who was the best wolf girl?" This one question was what we reflected on and it was also what guided us before and within the debate. A debate is all about making points and arguing your case. We were placed into groups and after that it was all in our hands. First step was preparation.
I was put into the group of Mirabella with 7 other people. We gathered evidence and traits of Mirabella that makes her the best wolf girl and how it can be used against the other groups in the argument. The next day, as a group, we put different people in section for the debate. We had the opening statement with Jayden, the Round-Robin argument which was me and reanna, the open forum with everyone, and lastly the closing statement with Natalie and Kaiden. This is where the debate begins.
The debate was interesting if you would describe it. Each group stated their claim until we reached the open forum where more than 2 people from each group argued their claim to each opponent. At first it started off simple until things got more tense and everyone started adding on. It was funny if I could describe it and entertaining. I loved hearing everyone’s POV and argument against one another.
The only struggle personally was finding different things to support the groups claim. I was stuttering and was a mess trying to pick up things to say, you could say I was panicking, however, at the end I got myself together and continued on.
The story was very simple to understand but when gathering evidence for a certain claim specifically given to you it’s a little difficult. What made it easier to participate in the debate was that there’s no right or wrong. Yes, you would be looked upon as wrong to the other groups because they ARE supposed to be against your opinion but when you understand what you are taking about you will convince yourself you are right either way. The debate is not all about being winners and being right, standing your ground until the end. Winner or not.
