Oh Romeo what have you gotten yourself into now...
After finishing Act 1 of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare there was a lot to unpack especially when it came to the Capulet's feast in Act 1.5. Romeo and Juliet met for the very first time and let's say fireworks went off once each other's eyes met one and another.
Romeo, the lovesick boy, was head over heals for Rosaline. but the feelings were never reciprocated. He moped around like a lovesick puppy until his cousin, Benvolio, told him straight up that he needs to move on and look around for the ladies he was missing out on which led them straight to the one and only feast of their enemy, the Capulets. It was never expected for Romeo to catch eyes on anyone since the state he was in because of Rosaline was.... painfully depressing, however once he saw Juliet there was no coming back. He was mesmerized by Juliet and her beauty leaving him in a spell that he couldn't escape. She was "As a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear—"(1.5.53), captivating and pure. At that point, Romeo had his eyes glued to Juliet and her every move but so did Juliet. Romantic, am I right?
"Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls is a song of many feelings and emotions that are being displayed within Romeo. When you read the lyrics and really go deeper into the meaning of this song you'll realize how similar this is to the emotional state Romeo is in right after his magical night with Juliet.
After Romeo left the Capulet's home there was a rush of emotions he was going through. One, he was shocked that the person he was falling head over heals for in one night turned out to be the daughter of the Capulet's and two, upset that the night had come to an end. The Capulet's and Montague's are enemies that do nothing but put each other through suffering and pain, so the night Romeo and Juliet had come acrossed as their one and only night together.
"All I can taste is this moment" displays as the romantic kiss Romeo and Juliet shared throughout the night. Romeo is left with the taste of Juliet's lip when they "let lips do what hands do" (1.5.114).....multiple times and the memory of her engraved in his head, nothing more, nothing less. The moment they had was so fresh that it was hard to forget especially since we know now how Romeo is when he is in love.
