Blog Post #2: Assimilation

Assimilation. One big word with a meaning of thousands. From the article "Even in a Diverse School, Assimilation Can be a Formidable Force" by Hiba Ali explains what assimilation is and how it connects to the world and society we live in. Assimilation is when a person changes themselves which includes their culture and culture identity to fit a certain standard. This is something very major and very common to occur especially in schools. Now and days, sometimes it's about what you wear, if your making "moves", or if you're good enough. Most of the time everyone minds their business and stick to their groups but there's always that thought behind your head asking what do people really think about me. Why am I saying this? Because culture is apart of who we are, it makes us who we are and having those certain thoughts or comments said makes you think is that the reason? Sometimes it is. No one should ever give up their cultural identity for nothing and nobody, not even an inch. If your in a environment and you don't seem to look like the rest of the people or act like the rest of the people it is not your fault because changing yourself to "fit in" just makes you not 100% true to yourself and you'll realize that sooner or later. In the school Beachwood there are words going around that that's what people feel. The difference between Beachwood and the school I attend, Richmond Hill High school, is that no matter what happens in this school you will never feel the need to change your culture because here everything is accepted. This school is full with diversity you'll never feel left out. Beachwood is the exact opposite. You feel the pressure to change. People don't have to tell you what they think, it's all in the eyes and they way the look at you.  Things need to change. I want action not words. Culture is what makes America, not having that, who knows what's going to happen.
